Which statistical metrics help evaluate teams?
Which statistical metrics do you find most useful when analyzing a football match? I try not to limit myself to just the league table and the last five results, as it can be hard to gauge a team's true form from those alone. Lately, I’ve started looking at goals, shots, possession, and home/away records. However, the number of metrics keeps growing, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. I’d love to hear your thoughts: which figures do you prioritize, and which ones really help form a more objective picture of the teams?

You can use a variety of statistical metrics to analyze football teams, but there is no need to track every single available figure. A good starting point includes recent match results, goals scored and conceded, home and away form, and the average number of shots and chances created. You can also look at possession, passing accuracy, corner kicks, and how the team performs against opponents of a similar level. However, a single figure rarely holds much significance without context. For instance, high possession doesn't always translate to many scoring chances, and a high shot count might simply reflect poor-quality attempts from long range. That’s why it’s best to compare several metrics simultaneously and see how they align with the overall picture. This analytical approach helps avoid oversimplified conclusions and provides a better understanding of how a team achieves its results.
